The Lens of Asabi

Art has the power to inspire, transform, and unite, exemplified through the Inspiring Tomorrow: Development Meets Art competition. Organized by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in collaboration with the Africa Art Fund, this honorable competition provided a platform for Nigeria-based artists under the age of 35 to showcase their creativity and vision for a shared future. With a theme centered on Collaborative Action for Growth, Competitiveness, and Stability, artists were challenged to explore concepts of design that emphasized sustainable economic development and collective progress.

Bringing Asabi to Life

As I brainstormed ideas, I kept returning to the rich cultural diversity of Nigeria. I wanted to create something that would capture the essence of our shared heritage—something that would reflect our unity in diversity. That was when the idea of Asabi was born.

I envisioned a woman, Asabi, who had traveled far and wide across Nigeria. Through her lens, she had seen the beauty of our differences, the richness of our traditions, and the potential we have as a united people. My artwork became her story—a letter to Nigeria.

To bring this vision to life, I incorporated elements that symbolized various aspects of Nigerian culture. The landscape in my artwork represents different expressions of Nigeria, from lush vegetation to vibrant colors, each stroke telling a story of tradition, resilience, and unity. Every detail was intentional, reflecting the belief that our strength as a nation lies in embracing our differences. When we come together—honoring and valuing our unique cultural identities—we build a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.

A Defining Moment

Submitting my work felt like stepping into the unknown. I had poured my heart into this piece, but with over 304 submissions, I knew the competition would be tough. Weeks later, I received an email that I had been selected among the top 40 artists to exhibit at the event!

The moment was surreal. Being recognized in my first-ever competition was both humbling and exhilarating. It was validation that my art resonated with others, that the story I wanted to tell through The Lens of Asabi had found its audience.

Stepping into the exhibition space and seeing my artwork displayed alongside other incredible pieces was a defining moment. The event was more than just an art showcase—it was a gathering of creative minds, thinkers, and visionaries who believe in the informative power of art. Conversations flowed, ideas were exchanged, and I felt deeply connected to a community of artists using their talents to inspire change.

Witnessing people engage with my work and interpreting it through their perspectives was a rewarding experience. Some saw Asabi as a traveler, a storyteller, and a symbol of unity. Others saw her as a reflection of themselves, their journey, and their heritage. It was a reminder that art is a bridge—connecting people, ideas, and possibilities.

Participating in this competition has been a defining chapter in my artistic journey. It reaffirmed my belief that art is more than just visual expression—it is a powerful tool for storytelling, connection, and change. The Lens of Asabi is more than a painting; it is an invitation for Nigerians to see each other through a lens of appreciation and understanding.
